MASSIVE GREEK BRONZE HYDRIA WITH A SIREN - EX BONHAMS

Ca. 420 - 380 BC. A bronze hydria with a broad ovoid body rising to a tall cylindrical neck and an overhanging mouth, the rim decorated with an ovolo moulding. Two horizontal loop handles are fixed on the shoulder at the sides, each mounted on rosette plates. The vertical handle is attached at the rear between them, set on a rosette on the back of the neck and descending to a siren attachment in relief on the shoulder, the creature shown frontally with spread wings and scrolling details below, terminating in a palmette-like lower element. The vessel sits on a circular foot with a flaring profile and a ribbed moulding.
