STUNNING APULIAN RED-FIGURE KRATER WITH HERMAPHRODITE

Ca. 350 BC. A red-figure bell krater with a deep body beneath a broad flaring rim, twin horizontal handles, and a tall stem on a disc-shaped foot. A laurel wreath runs beneath the rim. Side A shows a nude hermaphrodite in profile holding a phiale, with added dotting around the head and a festoon of white dots suspended above, framed by scrolling foliate tendrils. Side B shows a draped figure seated in profile holding a phiale and wreath, within a matching framed panel. The handle zones are decorated with large palmettes, and a narrow wave band encircles the lower body. Size: 375mm x 375mm; Weight: 4.27kg Provenance: Private London collection; previously acquired on the Belgium art market; originally in the collection of D Bogaerts, Brussels 1990?s.
