STUNNING APULIAN CALYX KRATER WITH FUNERARY SCENE BY THE VARRESE PAINTER

Ca. 350 - 340 BC. A red-figure terracotta calyx krater with a deep body tapering to a stem foot, a broad outward-flaring mouth with a rounded lip, and two loop handles set low on the body. Side A: a seated draped male on a box-seat between two female attendants; the woman at left advances with a shallow tray of offerings, the woman at right approaches with a situla and a pyxis, details in added white. Side B: two draped women flanking a cylindrical altar bound with a taenia; one holds a phiale and a stylised bunch of grapes, the other a pyxis and grapes. The rim encircled by a running wave; beneath the mouth a laurel-wreath frieze; below the figured friezes a further wave-band, with on Side A an additional wave and on Side B a meander.
