Ca. AD 1 - 100. A carnelian intaglio engraved with an eagle?s head facing left, with a sharply hooked beak and a prominent, round eye. The oval stone is mounted in a Victorian gold ring with a broad bezel frame and a narrow inner collet. Split shoulders form openwork panels at each side, joining a plain hoop of D-section with maker's mark and gold standard marks to the interior. Size: D:16.51mm / US: 6 / UK: L 1/2; Weight: 3g Provenance: Private London collection; acquired in Belgium; formerly in a German private collection before 2000.
