MASSIVE APULIAN BELL KRATER WITH DIONYSIAC SCENE BY CIRCLE OF TARPOLEY PAINTER

Ca. 340 BC. A bell krater with a broad, flaring rim above a deep body set on a tall stem and wide, stepped foot. A laurel wreath runs beneath the lip. The twin upturned handles are framed by radiating borders, and the zones below the handles are filled with palmettes and scrolling tendrils. A key meander band encircles the lower body. Side A shows Dionysus in profile, reclining with his legs extended. He holds a large phiale out in his right hand and a thyrsus staff in his left. A satyr at left holds a casket and a bunch of grapes, while a draped maenad at right holds a fan. A theatrical mask is suspended between the figures, with further hanging objects in the field. Side B shows three youths wrapped in himatia. Two lean on staffs, and a pair of halteres is suspended between them. For similar see: The Spurlock Museum, 1990.09.0001.
