A carved bamboo ‘lady and scroll’ brushpot, Signed Zhang Buqing

Bamboo Carvings from the Wumingtang Collection signed with seal marks Zhang Buqing Height 14 cm, 5½ in. Zhang Buqing (dates unknown) was a native of Jiading during the reigns of the Qianlong and Jiaqing Emperors. An autodidact, Zhang is particularly well known for his carvings of fruiting branches; his style is said to resemble that of Deng Yongji. Due to his reclusive lifestyle, little is known of Zhang’s oeuvre and his skills remained largely unknown during his lifetime.
