the top inscribed Ningshou Gong beiyong (For use in the Palace of Tranquil Longevity) 155 x 240 cm, 61 by 94½ in. Its construction beginning in 1771 on the orders of the Qianlong Emperor (r. 1736-1795), the Ningshougong or 'Palace of Tranquil Longevity' was designed as a place of retirement for the emperor who abdicated the throne in deference to the sixty-year reign of his grandfather, the Kangxi Emperor (r. 1662-1722). During the reign of Empress Dowager Cixi (1835-1908), the hall continued to be adorned and used as a function room for receiving esteemed guests.
