'La Vague (The Wave). 1895-98. Woodcut. Initialed and numbered '46/60' lower margins in pencil. Provenance: Pillsbury Fine Prints, Inc. NY. Literature: Guerin 8 ii/ii. Note: Throughout Maillol's career the female form was a dominate theme. Maillol often depicted women in various states of repose and in various medium. This woodcut dates from early in his career, when he used his wife Clotilde as his first nude model. The stylized waves of water and the medium of the woodcut are evidence of the influence of Japanese prints on his work. From a W 86th St, Manhattan estate. Dimensions: Sight: 7.875" h x 8.875" w. Frame: 15.75" h x 16.25" w. 品相: The condition is consistent with the age and the materials of the work which may indicate imperfections. Surface grime below initials. Slight rippling to surface. Framed with glass. Not examined out of the frame.
