Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, Ameca-Etzatlan tradition, Ca. 2nd century BC - 3rd century AD. >A powerfully grounded Jalisco pottery figure, this semi-nude female sits with knees bent and folded beneath her, her weight settling inward in a posture that feels deliberate, stable, and self-contained. Bare-chested above a simple skirt, she rests her hands firmly on her thighs, a pose that emphasises physical presence and bodily authority rather than narrative gesture. Modelled in hollow ceramic, the figure displays the hallmarks of the Ameca-Etzatlan tradition, with an emphasis on mass, clarity of form, and carefully observed anatomy. The breasts are rendered with prominent nipples, underscoring themes of fertility and female vitality that recur throughout West Mexican figural sculpture. Her hands are especially well articulated, with individually modelled fingers and clearly defined fingernails pressing against the thighs, conveying both tension and intent.
