Ca. 10th - 7th century BC. >A carved Olmec stone mask depicting a stylized human?jaguar face, executed in green serpentine. The face is characterized by deeply carved almond-shaped eye openings, a broad flattened nose, and a rectangular open mouth with a recessed aperture. The strongly arched brows and pronounced facial planes give the mask a powerful and compact expression.Masks of this type are associated with Olmec ritual and elite culture, where the combination of human and jaguar traits reflects an important symbolic motif within early Mesoamerican belief systems.
