Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu, Ca. 10th - 15th century AD. >A blackware stirrup spout vessel formed as a rounded squash, its lobed body modelled with alternating smooth and dotted vertical bands. The surface is evenly burnished, producing the dark metallic sheen characteristic of Chimu reduction-fired ceramics. The stirrup spout rises in a strong arch and supports a vertical chimney, on the side of which sits a small modelled monkey. The animal is compact and simplified, with rounded head and limbs consistent with Chimu sculptural conventions. Squash-form vessels appear frequently in North Coast ceramic traditions and likely reference agricultural abundance or utilitarian gourd containers. The stirrup spout design, widely used across the region, provided structural stability and may have helped regulate evaporation.
