VINTAGE JAPANESE PATINATED BRONZE HIBACHI ON FITTED WOOD BASEDESCRIPTIONAn impressive late 19th or early 20th-century Japanese bronze hibachi (brazier), traditionally used for holding charcoal to heat a room or warm tea. This heavy, cast-bronze vessel features a classic bulbous form with a wide, flared rim and a pair of robust "half-moon" lug handles. The exterior is decorated with horizontal bands of relief-cast wave patterns (Seigaiha), a traditional Japanese motif representing peace and resilience. The piece is set upon a custom-fitted circular wooden pedestal base with a characteristic cutout for ventilation. Very good antique condition with one tiny hole and patina consistent with use and handling. Please refer to the photos for more details. Measures 14-1/2" in top opening and 10" on height. Provenance: From the estate and heirs of Robert Clarence Pruyn (1847–1934), American inventor, banker, businessman, and politician; son of Robert Hewson Pruyn, who was the Minister to Japan as appointed by Abraham Lincoln, and founder of Albany Law School; a member of one of Albany’s oldest and most prominent Dutch families in New York. This property in auction was from the Pruyn/Morgan family Summer home collection at Papoose Island in Clayton, NY, where many of the wealthy families of the Gilded Age summered in the 1000 Islands, lived very well and entertained lavishly.
