Cast after a model by Eugene-Antoine Aizelin (French, 1821-1909), by Maison Marnyhac, 1 Rue de la Paix, Paris, circa 1900 Cast in gilt bronze, the bust depicting a young Breton or provincial woman, shown at half-length, her head slightly inclined with eyes downcast; wearing a lace-trimmed coif tied at the side and inscribed E.Aizelin . The reverse stamped "MAISON MARNYHAC", 1 Rue de la Paix, Paris" and bearing a circular foundry seal, (Bronze Artistique de Paris) the front of the integral plinth engraved "SORTIE DE L'EGLISE, all set on a stepped rectangular base. Height 22 inches (56 cm), width 13 inches (33 cm). Footnote: This model derives from a sculptural composition by Eugène Antoine Aizelin (1821–1902), a French academic sculptor known for his refined genre figures and idealized representations of contemporary life. The subject Sortie de l’Église (“Leaving Church”) reflects the late 19th-century taste for poetic, narrative-driven depictions of regional costume and quiet bourgeois piety. The present example was cast by Maison Marnyhac, one of the leading Parisian bronze foundries of the period, renowned for producing high-quality reductions after established sculptors. Their Rue de la Paix premises positioned them at the center of the luxury decorative arts trade, supplying finely finished bronzes to an international clientele. The delicate chasing of the lace headdress and the softly modeled facial features are characteristic of Aizelin’s aesthetic.
