17th century Comprising one pair and a similar model; each pedestal of square section with molded top above a shaped tapering support elaborately carved with acanthus, scrollwork and masks, terminating in bold scroll bases and paw feet. The central pedestal with molded tapering support carved with grotesque and lion mask and shell cartouche. Each pedestal decorated in parcel gilding, with traces of original polychromy. Height 47 1/2 inches (120 cm), width 17 inches (43 cm), depth 17 inches (43 cm). Pedestals of this type were popular in the 17th Century for displaying sculpture, urns, or devotional figures in palazzi and churches. The rich acanthus scrolls, grotesque masks and lion-paw feet are hallmarks of Italian Baroque design, combining dramatic theatricality with fine craftsmanship.
