By J. Darmanin & Son, mid-19th Century On a later ebonized base. The shaped rectangular panel with a molded black marble border, the field centered by a polychrome armorial crest within a shield for the Baker family of County Tipperary, Ireland (not totally identical), with motto ribbon beneath inscribed 'HONUS VIRTUTIS SATELLES' (Honor is the companion of virtue); surrounded by specimen marbles and pietre dure panels depicting shells and marine motifs, the sprandels and reserves embellished with geometric cartouches in brecciated marbles and small floral sprays. The front edge with the inlaid inscription DARMANIN MALTA. Height of the table 20 inches (51.5 cm), width of the panel 37 1/2 inches (95.5 cm), depth of the panel 31 1/2 inches (80 cm) Provenance: Sotheby's New York, Important English Furniture, Ceramics & Decorations, October 16, 2008 lot 58. The Darmanin family were the most prominent dynasty of furniture makers in Malta, specifically in the inlaid marble and hardstone style that had been typical of the island for centuries. At the Great Exhibition of 1851, Darmanin & Sons showed a table with the arms of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert that was subsequently bought for the Royal Collection, and can be seen today in the Throne Room at Buckingham Palace (RCIN 2631). Characteristics of the the Darmanin workshop are: Serpentine outline, a hallmark of higher end Maltese tops, specimen marble cartouches set into a contrasting ground, armorial commissions for Irish/British clients (very typical for Malta export trade, shell inlay panels, a recurring motif in the Darmanin production, yellow ground with black reserves, seen in documentary examples. 品相： No condition report?
