Circa 1820, in the manner of John McLean The rectangular top above an acanthus frieze centered by a rosette and flanked by later giltwood masks, on a trestle support and scroll feet joined by a stretcher. Height 29 inches (50.8 cm), width 60 1/2 inches (153.6 cm), depth 31 inches (78.7 cm). Footnote: This writing table displays characteristics closely associated with the London firm of John McLean & Son, noted for furniture produced in a refined French taste. Operating initially from Little Newport Street, Leicester Square, the firm relocated in 1783 to 55 Upper Marylebone Street, where it remained until 1825. Contemporary notices in The Times advertised their “warerooms with new and elegant assemblage of Parisian furniture,” reflecting their engagement with fashionable French design (Geoffrey Beard and Christopher Gilbert, Dictionary of English Furniture, 1660–1840 (Leeds: Furniture History Society / W. S. Maney & Son, 1986), 567–68). Although the firm employed various paper labels, their work is sufficiently distinctive to allow confident stylistic attribution. The table reflects the Neoclassical idiom inspired by the Louis XVI style, with restrained proportions and classical ornament. Executed in dark rosewood, it is enriched with fine brass inlay and ornamented with gessoed masks to the corners and gessoed fronds to the feet, decorative features strongly associated with the firm’s output. A further diagnostic feature is the presence of a black wash applied to the underside of the carcass, a workshop practice noted by Simon Redburn as occurring on certain pieces by John McLean & Son in place of the more usual red ochre (Simon Redburn, "John McLean," Furniture History 14 (1978), pg. 3). Together, these stylistic and constructional details support an attribution to one of the most accomplished London cabinetmaking firms of the late eighteenth century.
