Probably French, late 19th Century The spherical case formed as a celestial globe surmounted by an allegorical gilt-bronze winged figure of Urania (the muse of astronomy) holding a baton, lacquered in green and decorated with gilt stars; around its equator runs a revolving chapter ring with Roman numerals, (characteristic of the pendule à cercles tournants mechanism); the globe is supported by a figural group representing Atlas and attendant figure in gilt-bronze; the group stands on a naturalistic base above a shaped burl-walnut, satinwood and kingwood inlaid case; the upper pedestal is of drum-form with gilt-bronze mounts; the main pedestal with recessed panels and gilt-bronze mounts, on stepped ebonized wood plinth.
