After a model by Eugene Marioton (French, 1854-1933), circa 1900 Finely cast as a standing scantilly clad male nude in contrapposto, with subtly turned head to the left, holding a sheated sword in his right hand, set on an integrally cast base, the title cast to the front LA FORGE PROTEGEANT LE DROIT. Height 31 1/2 inches (79 cm), width 18 inches (45.5 cm). Footnote: Eugène Marioton was a French sculptor associated with the Academic tradition and the Paris Salon, where he exhibited regularly. His work frequently explores allegorical and classical themes, often depicting idealized male and female figures with a refined naturalism. In late 19th-century French sculpture, such allegories were popularized through néo-grec and Academic interpretations, emphasizing purity, youth, and timeless beauty. The laurel-entwined sword may allude to virtue, victory, or the moral authority associated with this idealized age.
