Cast after a model by Henri Honoré Plé (1853-1922), circa 1900 Finely cast as an idealized scantilly cast male nude standing in contrapposto; the torso subtly twisting as the head turns outward, holding a long spear upright in his left hand, with the right rests on his hip; set on an integrally base with textured ground with insribed ribbon RIVMPHATOR, signed H Plé. Height 38 inches (96.5 cm), width 8 1/2 inches (21.5 cm). Footnote: Henri Honoré Plé exhibited at the Paris Salon and worked firmly within the Academic tradition. His works frequently revisits classical prototypes, emphasizing idealized anatomy, balanced composition, and refined surface finishing. The present figure belongs to a group of late 19th-century French bronzes depicting heroic or allegorical male youth subjects rooted in Greco-Roman antiquity and popularized through the néo-grec taste of the period. The spear reinforces the classical warrior or guardian archetype, representing Triumph (Victory personified), a theme closely associated with Roman imperial imagery.
