Circa 1815 Of architectural form, the black marble case adorned with a central lion-mask crest and a symmetrical arrangement of cornucopia and palmettes, the circular white enamel dial inscribed Etne. Mugnier with Roman numerals, pierced gilt-bronze hands in the form of stylized arrows terminating in a star, on stepped rectangular plinth adorned with gilt-bronze frieze panels with a basket flanked by rams. Height 18 3/4 inches (47,5 cm), width 9 3/4 inches (25 cm), depth 6 inches (15 cm). Etienne Mugnier opened his workshop near the Palais-Royal in Paris in 1786. He had been a student of renowned watch and clockmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet for well over a decade. He had extensive mechanical skills, making not only clocks and watches, but also automatons, and collaborated with bronze-makers to develop special clocks.
