Stamped I.Gourdin, mid-18th Century Each overall upholstered in Fortuny Sevres old rose and beige cotton fabric; with cartouche backrest, the top rail carved with flowerheads and leaf tips, each armrest on molded voluted supports; the serpentine seat rail carved to match the backrest and supported by cabriole legs carved at the knees with flower heads ending in leaf-carved toes. Height 37 3/4 inches (95.8 cm), width 26 inches (66 cm), depth 21 inches (53.3 cm). Jean-Baptiste Gourdin reçu maître in 1748. Provenance: Sotheby’s, New York, December 10, 1994, lot 309. Footnote: Jean-Baptiste Gourdin maintained a workshop on rue de Cléry under the sign 'Nom de Jesus". Among his clients was the Prince de Soubisse; his production, which continued into the early reign of Louis XVI, follows classical models.
