Stamped twice De Laitre, circa 1740 With liver marble top above two short drawers and two long drawers, with rocaille cast chutes, on splayed foilate-cast feet on cabriole legs terminating in gilt-bronze sabots. Height 33 1/4 inches (84.4 cm), width 38 inches (96.5 cm), depth 23 1/2 inches (59.6 cm). Louis Delaitre recu maître in 1738. Provenance: Christie’s New York, September 24, 1998, lot 23. Footnote: Louis Delaitre produced furniture in his workshop on the rue Saint-Nicolas in the early Louis XV style, and even firmly within the Régence tradition. His output consists chiefly of commodes of rather solid proportions, sometimes of tombeau form, as well as slant-front desks and dressing tables with compartments, veneered in rosewood, kingwood, or satinwood, and more rarely decorated with floral marquetry. Delaitre also stamped certain pieces executed in Boulle marquetry of brass and tortoiseshell, such as a large bureau plat embellished with mascarons, corner mounts with bearded male heads, scrollwork, and gilt-bronze framing elements, though he may in fact only have restored such works. He also supplied furniture to several prominent marchand-merciers, including his colleague Migeon. A Louis XV two-drawer commode and a corner cabinet are known bearing both their stamps. It should be noted that Delaitre’s commodes are often fitted with substantial gilt-bronze mounts, sometimes inspired by the Régence style, at other times more distinctly Rocaille in character.
