Mid-19th century Of slightly tapering square form, overall painted with blossoming chrysanthemums in rich red and gilt above a geometric border. Height 4 3/4 inches (12.2 cm). Provenance: Mark & Marjorie Allen Antiques. Footnote: Edme Samson founded Edme Samson et Cie in 1845, becoming well known for producing high‑quality porcelain inspired by earlier European factories such as Chelsea, Derby, Meissen, and Sèvres, as well as Chinese and Japanese export wares. The present examples imitate the form of a larger Japanese sake bottle and feature a chrysanthemum motif that was especially popular during the late Edo and Meiji periods. A key distinguishing feature of this pair is the mark on the underside—an identifying stamp unique to Edme Samson. These marks were sometimes removed over time in an effort to obscure the true origin of the pieces.
