Two Chinese Export Porcelain Pronk 'La Dame au Parasol' Plates

Mid-18th century Each decorated in the Imari palette after the Dutch artist Cornelis Pronk, depicting an attendant shading a lady standing before waterbirds, within an iron-red border, each reverse with insects in cobalt blue. Diameter 9 1/8 inches (23.3 cm). A comparable example was sold at Doyle on September 21, 2023, as lot 368. Cornelis Pronk was a highly skilled Dutch painter and draughtsman. As a member of the Guild of St. Luke, he quickly became the leading topographical draughtsman of the early 18th century. In 1734, after the VOC (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie) began commissioning Chinese export porcelain, the Heren XVIII engaged Pronk to design patterns for porcelain services. In 1736, four of his chinoiserie designs were sent to the VOC headquarters in Batavia. The most frequently encountered is La Dame au Parasol, as seen in the examples above. Pronk also created The Four Doctors, The Arbour, and The Hand Washing, all of which are held in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Provenance: Mark & Marjorie Allen Antiques.
