American, 1899-1988 Untitled Maquette (from Orfeo ed Euridice Production), circa 1984 Signed and inscribed on the reverse to Richard Gaddes Aerosol paint and gold leaf on wood 30 x 12 inches (76.2 x 30.5cm) Unframed Provenance: Gift of the artist to Richard Gaddes Thence by decent Richard Gaddes was the founding general director of Opera Theatre Saint Louis from 1976 to 1987. Richard Gaddes hired Louis Nevelson for her theatrical debut to design the sets and costumes for Opera Theatre's 1984 production of Orfeo ed Euricide. Nevelson conceptualized Opera's set pieces from this maquette she built and painted in black and gold, along with costumes and jewelry for the cast. It is reported that during the opening night after-party, Nevelson gifted the staff necklaces inspired by her designs. This maquette for the set design was a gift directly to Richard Gaddes by Louis Nevelson. 品相: Overall in great condition. The elements are all intact. The gold leaf surface has natural lines and variation on the surface consistent with the material used. Small dents and handling marks throughout consistent with the purpose of the Maquette for the stage production of Orfeo ed Euridice.
