Possibly by Philippe Poirie, after designs by Joseph Belanger, Circa 1775 Each with moulded breakfronted liver marble tops above a pierced panelled frieze with alternating stars and domed rosettes within an entrelacs border, the legs headed by panelled panels with an ‘MC’ monogram, on ribbon-tied pieds en console carved with floral garlands and berried laurel and joined by a concave-fronted stretcher surmounted by a serpent-wrapped neoclassical urn swagged with floral garlands, the decoration largely original, each with handwritten labels ‘202’ and in red chalk ‘AR’. Height 36 1/2 inches (92.5 cm), width 47 1/2 inches (120 cm), depth 16 inches (41 cm). Philippe Poirie or Poirier, recu maître in 1765 Supplied to Marie-Catherine Colombe, Pavillon Colombe, Saint Brice, France. M. Revenaz, who purchased the château in 1805. M. Guy, mayor of Saint Brice. Thence by descent to Colonel de Mondonville, son-in-law of M. Guy. Thence by descent to Mme. de Mondonville. Mrs Burns, sister of J. Pierpont Morgan, and then by descent to her daughter. Viscountess d’Harcourt, by whom was sold Christie’s London, 22 June 1927, lot 156 (572 gns.).
