Stamped CRESSON on seat rail, mid-18th Century The shaped cartouche-form back surmounted by a richly carved crest with rocaille and foliate motif, the frame with contineous ornament and beaded inner molding; the padded back, arms and seat upholstered in a Scalamandre yellow silk damask; the outscrolled arms with padded armrests; the serpentine seat rail centered by a shell cartouche, flanked by rocaille ornament, on cabriole legs, carved with trailing foliage and terminating in scroll feet. Height 36 1/2 inches (93 cm), width 26 1/2 inches (67 cm), depth 22 inches (56 cm), seat height 17 inches (43 cm). The stamp CRESSON relates to the well-known family of Parisian chair makers including René, Jean-Baptiste and Louis Cresson. René Cresson, reçu maître in 1738.
