By Jean Avisse, mid-18th century The cartouche-form backrest with molded and carved crest rail, and acanthus carved shoulder, with outscrolled padded arms; the serpentine seat rail carved with rocaille and floral scrollwork, on cabriole legs carved with trailing foliage and terminating in scroll feet; stamped AVISSE on the seat rail. Height 39 inches (99 cm), width 28 1/2 inches (72.5 cm), depth 22 1/2 inches (57 cm), seat height 18 inches (46 cm). Jean Avisse (1723-1796) reçu maître in 1745. Footnote: Jean Avisse (1723-circa 1800) was elected maître in 1745 and worked from premises in the rue de Cléry. He was a leading menuisier during the mid-18th century, working for the French crown and aristocratic patrons, including the comtesse de Fontenay, the chevalier de Lamotte, the duchesse de La Tremoille and the marquise de Chabannes (The J. Paul Getty Museum Journal, Vol. 12, Malibu, 1984, p. 199). He collaborated with the most important sculptors of his time, such as François Baillard and Pierre Rousseau.
