19th Century The Combat Oil on canvas 34 1/4 x 46 1/4 inches (87 x 117.5 cm) Frame 40 1/4 x 52 1/4 inches (102.2 x 132.8 cm) The original version of this composition, painted in 1825 by William Etty (1787-1849) and exhibited at the Royal Academy the same year, is now in the collection of the National Gallery of Scotland. Rather than illustrating a particular incident from ancient history or epic poetry, the artist intended to contrast the terrifying brutality of the combat with the compassionate plea of the woman trying to intervene.
