Portrait of a Young Man Late 18th Century Inscribed Theresia Cabarrus f (lr) and dated 1791 (ll) in black chalk on the mount Black chalk, pierre noire, white gouache, and watercolor on tan paper mounted on a second sheet, which has been laid to board 8 x 6 5/8 inches (20.4 x 16.7 cm) Frame 13 5/8 x 11 3/8 inches (34.7 x 29 cm) Difficult-to-read inscriptions on the backing indicate some connection between this drawing and Thérésa Cabarrus, known as Mme. Tallien, a famous society beauty and political activist during the 1790s in France. There is also a reference to one "J. Hottinguer," perhaps a member of the well-known banking family, who may have owned this work at one time. The forceful impression of Revolutionary fervor projected by the sitter here has led one expert on French art of the late 18th century to suggest that this may be a portrait of the firebrand Jacobin theoretician Louis Antoine de Saint-Just (1767–1794). 品相: In good condition.
