Ca. 200 - 1 BC. A matched pair of gold earrings, each with a winged sphinx seated on a rectangular plinth with a frieze of tongues. The creature is modelled with a female head, the body adorned with coiled wire ornaments and fitted at the flanks with circular cells for insets, with a wing rising behind the back. The head of each sphinx is surmounted by a circular plate centred on a garnet cabochon within a ribbed border, and above a teardrop-shaped garnet in a serrated case ending in a loop. The ear hoop is flattened with a twisted section at the centre, on both faces. For similar see: Christie's, Live Auction 1583, Ancient Jewelry, 8 December 2005, Lot 56. Size: 42-46mm x 34-36mm; Weight: 10.9g Provenance: Private London collection; previously part of a distinguished New York private collection, assembled between 1975 and 1995. The collection was authenticated in the early 1990s by Dr. Jack Ogden and Barbara Deppert Lippitz, leading specialists in ancient jewellery. A significant number of objects from this collection were also published in a professional catalogue. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
