Ca. first half of the 20th century AD. >An elongated Luba shield carved from wood, distinguished by its broad, gently tapering form. The surface is decorated with a striking pattern of alternating light and dark concentric lines from carved wood, arranged in mirrored arcs that meet at the centre to create a rhythmic and symmetrical composition. The incised decoration follows the contours of the shield, producing a dynamic optical effect across the surface. Shields of this type were used among Luba peoples of the southern Congo region, serving both practical and ceremonial functions.
