拍品描述
Circa 1870s - 1890s, including 21 saucers and 12 cups, this extensive lot features a set of antique English porcelain demitasse cups and saucers manufactured by Copeland Spode. The service is characterized by a dramatic aesthetic, featuring a bold black band (or "ground") that provides a striking contrast to the hand-painted floral motifs and rich gold gilding. The design showcases a central floral basket or bouquet in the well of the saucers and the interior of the cups, surrounded by additional floral sprays on the black-bordered rims. Demitasse sets with this specific style are highly collectible for its formal elegance and "cabinet plate" quality. The bases bear the printed "Copeland Spode England" hallmark utilized during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Overall good antique condition, with one visible hairline crack is present on one saucer and one cup, six of the teacups are in excellent interior condition, showing no or almost no staining to the glaze, while the remaining cups exhibit more or less age-related staining and discoloration to their interior glaze, flea bite chips also observed on rims of a couple pieces. Please refer to the photos for more details. The saucers measure 4-3/8" in diameter and the cup measures 2-1/4" in height approximately. Provenance: From the estate and heirs of Robert Clarence Pruyn (1847–1934), American inventor, banker, businessman, and politician; son of Robert Hewson Pruyn, who was the Minister to Japan as appointed by Abraham Lincoln, and founder of Albany Law School; a member of one of Albany’s oldest and most prominent Dutch families in New York. This property in auction was from the Pruyn/Morgan family Summer home collection at Papoose Island in Clayton, NY, where many of the wealthy families of the Gilded Age summered in the 1000 Islands, lived very well and entertained lavishly.
