A GEORGE II IRISH SILVER SHAPED CIRCULAR CARD TRAY JAMES WARREN, DUBLIN, CIRCA 1755 With a scrolled border, engraved with a foliate band and a crest, on three scroll feet 16.5cm diameter 279g (9 oz) Provenance: Lyon & Turnbull, The Tankine Collection, 24th June 2014, Lot 101 This is the crest associated with the arms of the TRAFFORD family of Liverpool who were descended of Swithamley (Leek), Staffordshire. It is suspected that the engraving was added to the card tray at the time of assay (1755) for Edward TRAFFORD (1710-1763) who was born at Swithamley but lived in Liverpool. He married Margaret WINDSOR (1709-1740) and their daughter Susannah TRAFFORD (1735-1804) married in 1762 at Liverpool, John Burridge LEIGH (1731-1806) of Outrington Hall (Lymm) Cheshire. Notably their son Trafford LEIGH (1731-1859), also of Outrington, later adopted the family name TRAFFORD and their arms by licence. Edward TRAFFORD had a number of surviving sons who could also have been owners of the item but unlikely.
