Rolex. An unusual silver mechanical wristwatch with black enamel dial Case No.720311, London import hallmark for 1917 Hand-wound 15 jewel movement, black enamel dial with white numerals, outer minute track and subsidiary seconds, skeleton hands, circular silver case with screw-down bezel and reverse, hinged lugs. Case signed Rolex/ W&D; and numbered, movement signed. Diameter 34mm. From the family of the original owner. This design of wristwatch are often referred to as ‘Trench Watches’ due to their popularity during the first world war, similar examples with black enamel dials from various manufacturers can be found in the book ‘British Military Timepieces’ by Konrad Knirim, page 498.
