拍品描述

Ca. 20th century AD. >A cylindrical Mangbetu honey container constructed from sheets of bark carefully shaped into a tall tubular form and secured along the vertical seam with stitched fibre binding. The fitted lid follows the same construction, forming a slightly domed top that sits over the body. A woven fibre carrier strap is attached to the side, allowing the container to be suspended or carried during travel. Containers of this type were used by the Mangbetu for storing and transporting honey, an important resource in Central African forest regions. The lightweight bark construction, reinforced with fibre stitching, demonstrates the practical ingenuity of Mangbetu craftsmanship and the effective use of locally available materials. > >Size: 550mm x 190mm; Weight: 1.8kg >Provenance: Prince Collection, 1990s-2014; ex Colette Ghysels 24 November 2009. > This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter. >
