Chinese school, Qing dyansty, 19th century The Miao Album, Miaoman Tu Ink and colour on paper, mounted as consecutive album leaves, each painting inscribed with a paragraph as introduction of the subgroup of the Miao people, including name of the subgroup, customs and daily activities, comprising scenes of childbirth, costumes, sacrificial and wedding rituals, fishing practices, diet, river transport, and agricultural activities. The names of the subgroups menitoned: Langci Miao (郎慈苗), Shuijia Miao (水家苗), Mulao (仫佬), Xixi Miao (西溪苗), Luohan Miao (羅漢苗), Shui Gelao (水仡佬), Jiuming Jiuxing Miao (九名九姓苗), Dongzai Miao (洞崽苗), Hei Miao (黑苗), Liuezi (六額子), Qing Miao (箐苗), Hua Gelao (花仡佬), and Zhong Miao (狆苗), 19.5 x 25 cm (13). There are many versions of the Miao Album survived to the present day. It is a valuable historical ethnographic pictorial record passed down through history, reflecting the ethnic minorities of Yunnan and Guizhou. It documents the production activities, daily life, and entertainment customs of various Miao and other indigenous groups of the time. Originated during the Qianlong and Jiaqing reigns of the Qing Dynasty. Initially, it emerged from the state’s need to administer the Miao frontier regions. As a result, a trend of producing illustrated depictions of Miao and other frontier peoples arose. 傳世《苗蠻圖》版本眾多，為一類珍貴的歷史民族誌圖像文獻，反映雲南、貴州地區少數民族之社會面貌。圖冊內容記錄當時苗族及其他土著族群之生產活動、日常生活與娛樂風俗，具有重要的歷史與人類學研究價值。此類圖冊約興起於清代乾隆、嘉慶年間，最初源於官方對苗疆地區施行治理與管理之需要，因而逐漸形成繪製苗族及邊疆民族圖像的風氣，並流傳後世。
