A Chinese blue and white 'Kraak' style dish Mid 17th century The centre painted with a scene from the 'Romance of the Western Chamber' enclosed by concentric lines, the border with eight panels depicting the same scene alternating with panels of prunus, foliage and birds, the reverse with loose sprays of foliage, 34.5cm diameter. 十七世紀 青花克拉克人物故事紋盤 The shape and design of the border is of the type classified as 'Border IV' by Maura Rinaldi, distinguished by its subdivision into equal segments separated by double lines, see Rinaldi, Kraak Porcelain, London: Bamboo Publishing, 1989, p.82. Rinaldi dates this border type to 1575-1605, while the subject depicted, a scene from the dramatic play 'Romance of the Western Chamber', had been popular on Chinese porcelains since the thirteenth century.
