A Chinese incised green-glazed 'dragon and phoenix' bowl Qing dynasty, Qianlong mark and of the period Incised to the exterior with a five-clawed dragon and phoenix soaring amidst clouds and wisps above crashing waves, all beneath an even green glaze, the base with a six-character Qianlong seal mark in underglaze blue, 12cm diameter. 清乾隆 瓜皮綠釉暗刻龍鳳紋碗，青花篆書「大清乾隆年製」款 The green glaze, known as guapi (“melon-skin”) green for its lustrous tone resembling melon rind, is a low-temperature coloured glaze using copper oxide as the colouring agent. First developed at the imperial kilns during the Ming dynasty, production flourished particularly during the Jiajing period, before gradually declining. It was revived in the Kangxi period and became one of the glaze types produced at the Qing imperial kilns, with the technique reaching its peak of refinement during the Yongzheng and Qianlong reigns. The Taocheng Jishi Bei (Record of Ceramic Production) by Tang Ying notes: “Imitations of melon-skin green wares are of two types: plain and incised.” The present bowl belongs to the latter “incised” category. 瓜皮綠釉又稱澆綠釉，是一種以氧化銅為呈色劑的低溫顏色釉，因其釉色翠麗似瓜皮而得名，為明代御窯所創燒，嘉靖一朝燒造甚盛，其後漸斷絕，至康熙復燒，成為清代御窯燒造的品類之一。至雍正、乾隆時期，瓜皮綠釉的燒製技藝已臻完美。唐英《陶成紀事碑》載：「仿澆綠器皿，有素地、錐花兩種。」本品即為其中「錐花」品類。
