A Chinese incised green and aubergine-enamelled 'dragon' bowl Qing dynasty, Kangxi period, apocryphal Jiajing mark Finely incised to the exterior with two fearsome dragons chasing flaming pearls amongst lightning clouds, each with an angered facial expression, flanked by a pair of horns and revealing gnarled teeth, all finely enamelled in aubergine on a green ground, the base with a six-character apocryphal Jiajing mark in underglaze blue within a double circle, 10.8cm diameter. Comparable Kangxi-period examples imitating Jiajing styles and bearing apocryphal reign marks reading “Ming Jiajing Nian Zhi” can be found in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, accession numbers 故00147243, 故00146733, and 故00147548. The Jiajing reign (1522–1566), spanning forty-five years, witnessed a flourishing of imperial kiln production and remarkable achievements. The Qing dynasty scholar Ye Mengzhu commented: “Among porcelains, apart from those of the Chai, Ding, Guan and Ge kilns, those of the Chenghua and Jiajing reigns of the previous dynasty are the most beautiful and valuable” This assessment demonstrates the exceptional quality and high esteem of Jiajing imperial porcelains. From the late Ming period onwards, Jiajing wares were increasingly prized, and they were also highly regarded by the Qing imperial court. The present piece is an example produced during the Kangxi period in imitation of Jiajing wares.
