Ca. 19th - 20th century AD. A Zande / Mangbetu hairpin carved in dark wood, the elongated pin is surmounted by a stylised anthropomorphic figure. The figure displays the elegant, elongated proportions characteristic of Zande and Mangbetu sculptural aesthetics, often associated with courtly adornment and prestige. Such hairpins were worn by both men and women as status markers and were valued not only as personal ornaments but also as miniature works of sculpture.Size: 120mm x 12mm; Weight: 15gProvenance: Prince collection, 1990s-2014.
