oil on canvas Signed and dated lower right. Luigi De Servi was born in Lucca in 1863. From a young age, he studied painting in his father's studio, later enrolling at the Royal Institute of Fine Arts in Lucca, where he became a student of Luigi Norfini. From 1883, he moved to Argentina, where he received numerous commissions. He subsequently stayed in London and Paris before settling in Genoa. In 1909, he returned to the Argentine capital, where he remained until his repatriation in 1914. He subsequently settled in Lucca, joining the Fascist Party and serving as secretary of the Fascist Union of Lucca Artists. He died in Lucca in 1945. His painting, essentially academic in style, always maintained a high level of quality, both in his oils and frescoes, combining attention to pictorial detail with a meticulous psychological rendering of the subjects he depicted. This is even more evident in the numerous surviving portraits, as well as, of course, in our portrait of a nobleman, in which Giacomo Paulucci di Calboli (1887-1961) is depicted, proud and somewhat cocky. He was a Sicilian who, during the twenty-year period of Mussolini's rule, held various government positions, including, at the behest of Mussolini himself, president of the Istituto Luce.
