Oil on canvas Signed lower left. Mario Mirabella was born in Palermo in 1870. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Palermo, becoming a student and imitator of Francesco Lojacono. He made his debut in 1893 with a work depicting the Gulf of Naples (now housed in the Palazzo dei Normanni in Palermo) and, in April 1896, participated in the Fifth Exhibition of the Society for the Promotion of Fine Arts held at the Politeama Theater in Palermo. He subsequently exhibited his paintings in numerous Italian cities (Florence, Turin, etc.). In 1898, he moved to Taormina, one of his favorite subjects, where he remained until 1910. He died in Palermo in 1931. With his master Lojacono, he shared the typical and harmonious Mediterranean flair for light, specializing in the depiction of the island's coastal landscapes. In our evocative view of Monte Cofano in Trapani, the layered and dense impastos of color divide the painting into two sections, separating the shady, cooler grove from the airy, luminous seascape, bathed in warm, expansive sunlight.
