拍品描述

oil on canvas The painting, a tense but well-balanced battle scene between Christian and Turkish cavalry, can be attributed to Christian Reder, known in Italy as Monsù Leandro. The artist, originally from Leipzig, was active in Rome from 1686, working successfully as a painter specializing in detailed hunting and battle scenes, often taking up the practice of the more famous Borgognone in his compositional structures and in the articulation of the figures (although he preferred a smaller format than the latter). The attribution, in this case, was made on the basis of stylistic comparisons with works of certain autography published in the authoritative catalogue by Giacomo Sestieri “I Pittori di Battaglie” (Edizioni De Luca, 1999, pp. 406-419): the dynamic and structural lines of the scene, the typical expressiveness in the rendering of the horses' muzzles, the recurring physiognomy of the faces, as well as the style used in the representation of details such as weapons and hair, in fact find widespread and evident confirmations which become even more evident in direct comparison with plate no. 12 of the aforementioned catalogue (ibid., p. 412). ASOR Studio Bibliography: Giancarlo Sestieri, The Battle Painters, De Luca Editions, Rome, 1999.
