Born in Harbin, China, he graduated from the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (now the China Academy of Art) in 1984. Emerging in the mid-1980s during the period of avant-garde experimentation in China, Wang gained international recognition for his Great Criticism series, which juxtaposes imagery from Cultural Revolution propaganda with Western consumer brand logos. Through this striking visual language, he explores the ideological tensions between socialist collectivism and global capitalism. His work often reflects on power, mass culture, and the role of ideology in shaping modern society. His work has been widely exhibited internationally and is held in major public collections including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the M+ Museum in Hong Kong.
