The very finely woven silk brocade panel in the form of a almost triangular banner, decorated with a central fiercely striding dragon in pursuit of a flaming pearl surrounded by stylised ruyi clouds all against an ochre-yellow ground Size:(66 x 86cm) Qty: (1) Provenance:Private collection, London Notes: This fine silk brocade banner can be assumed to be most likely to have been produced for the purposes of military ceremonies or imperial processions. These banners were made in various formats and scales, however, the scale of the present banner suggests that it was made to be carried by hand and not intended for static suspension or architectural functions. Obversations of a painting attributed to the Wanli period and titled Chujing Rubi Tu (出警入蹕圖) housed in the collection of the National Palace Museum in Taipei, depict an imperial procession during an escort and attended by attendants and military personell in detail, which includes guards carrying dragon banners which are comparable to the present lot in scale but also overall design.
