JOHN MAKEPEACE (BRITISH 1939-) PAIR OF CHAIRS, 1980s each stamped John Makepeace Workshops (to rear leg), limed oak, steel and upholstered chairs 125cm high, 51.5cm wide, 52cm deep (49 ¼in high, 20 ¼in wide, 20 ½in deep) (2) Sotheby's, Olympia, London, Decorative Arts & Design from 1870, 29 May 2003;Dreweatts, Newbury, 2009;Private Collection, U.K. This pair were part of a set of fourteen chairs and a dining table commissioned by Sir Clive and Lady Sinclair for their home in Cambridge.Makepeace stated: “I consulted with a structural engineer at Arup to establish the details for the stainless steel frames, keeping them as minimal as possible. This was especially important for the table, given the size of the top in relation to the base, to ensure stability and rigidity.”
