MARY RESTIEAUX (BRITISH 1945-) TWO IKAT TEXTILES hand-dyed and woven, framed in Shimakuwa mulberry frames each 26.5cm x 23.5cm (10 3/8in x 9 ¼in) (2) Private Collection, U.K. Mary Restieaux is a textile designer, weaver and dyer whose career spans both commercial collaborations and fine art. Working primarily with ikat - an ancient resist-dyeing technique in which threads are bound and dyed before weaving - her textiles are known for their rich colour and fluid movement. After completing her MA at the Royal College of Art in 1974, she established a studio in South East London, where she continues to work on a traditional handloom producing designs for fashion and interiors. A member of the First Eleven Studio, she also worked for many years as colourist to the Paris designer Hervé Léger. Restieaux’s work has been exhibited internationally and is held in major collections, including the V&A;, London.The mulberry frames were made by Toshio Shimazaki in Japan.
