Ca. 19th -20th century AD. >A carved wooden ceremonial vessel surmounted by a sculptural composition characteristic of Dogon artistic traditions. The bowl is supported by a standing horse figure, its compact body resting on four sturdy legs upon a rectangular base. Above the animal rises a cylindrical support carrying a rounded lidded container, the surface of the vessel decorated with bands of incised geometric motifs.The lid is crowned by a seated human figure, rendered with elongated limbs and a stylised head, creating a vertical composition that emphasises symbolic hierarchy. The combination of animal, vessel, and human figure reflects themes commonly found in Dogon ritual objects, where horses may signify prestige and authority.Such containers were likely associated with ceremonial or ritual contexts, possibly used to hold offerings or sacred substances during community rites.
