MARCEL BREUER (HUNGARIAN 1902-1981) 'LONG CHAIR', DESIGNED 1935-6 / MANUFACTURED c.1965 manufactured by John Alan Designs, London, laminated birch plywood, with upholstered seat 84cm high, 129cm wide, 61cm deep (33in high, 50 ¾in wide, 24in deep) Jack Pritchard;Gifted from the above to the current owner's family in 1968, and by descent;Private Collection, U.K. The present Isokon Long Chair, designed by Marcel Breuer, was produced by John Alan Designs. During the 1960s, Jack Pritchard licensed John Alan to manufacture the design, as documented in the Pritchard Papers held at the University of East Anglia Archives. These examples were made in laminated beech plywood, with the seat resting on a cross support - a later modification by Breuer to provide additional strength.
